Afterword by JOHN BOYNE, author of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
_______________

Eddy de Wind, a Dutch doctor and psychiatrist, was shipped to Auschwitz with his wife Friedel, whom he had met and married at the Westerbork labour camp in the Netherlands. At Auschwitz, they made it through the brutal selection process and were put to work. Each day, each hour became a battle for survival.

For Eddy, this meant negotiating with the volatile guards in the medical barracks. For Friedel, it meant avoiding the Nazis’ barbaric medical experiments. As the end of the war approached and the Russian Army drew closer, the last Nazis fled, taking many prisoners with them, including Friedel. Eddy hid under a pile of old clothes and stayed behind. Finding a notebook and pencil, he began to write with furious energy about his experiences.

Last Stop Auschwitz is an extraordinary account of life as a prisoner, a near real-time record of the daily struggle to survive but also of the flickering moments of joy Eddy and Friedel found in each other. Documenting the best and the worst of humanity, it is a unique and timeless story that reminds us of what we as humans are capable of, but that there is hope, even in Hell.

From the Publisher

Eddy de Wind, a Dutch doctor and psychiatrist, was shipped to Auschwitz with his wife Friedel in 1943. Unlike many, they survived the selection process, but were separated. Eddy was sent to Block 9 as part of the medical staff and Friedel to Block 10 where medical experiments were conducted by doctors, including the notorious Josef Mengele.

Eddy met and married Friedel in Westerbork, a transit camp for the deportation of Jews in the east of the Netherlands. From Westerbork, inmates were sent on to concentration camps. Eddy had been told that his mother would be exempted from deportation in exchange for his work, but she had already been sent to Auschwitz but the time he arrived.

Experiments performed on the girls at Auschwitz were barbaric. They caused horrific wounds and the girls suffered enormous pain. The only benefit to Friedel being send to Block 10 was her close proximity to Eddy. They were able to see each other for brief moments and share stories of their ordeals.

Growing up, Eddy was a good student and enjoyed life. He had a Christian girlfriend and at night he performed regularly with the Rhythm Rascals, a jazz band in which he played the clarinet.
