OF ALL THE ASSIGNMENTS A SERVICEMAN MIGHT FIND HIMSELF UNDERTAKING during WW2, flying seemed to offer the greatest promise of glory. The world’s air forces were relatively new and elite. Aviation was the wave of the future and new aircraft were built that employed equipment and designs that were on the cuttingedge of technology. Many strategists even predicted that air-power would be the decisive factor in the waging of modern warfare. What was not apparent to anyone in the early years of the conflict was that flying would become the most dangerous job of the war. Indeed, a flyer had less chance of survival than any other serviceman in any other branch of the military. This was an aspect of the air-war that no one had anticipated, particularly the men who flew the planes. During the war, over 130 thousand allied airmen perished whilst those who survived were permanently changed by the experience. Their perseverance in the face of daunting circumstances is a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit.

A film that can be repeatedly watched.
Not sure if this was real colour film or colour digitised black and white stock. However the method used is not important as more to the point is viewing the dark side of European history with the reasons, causes and results in the hope that it is not repeated. A must film for anyone studying mid twentieth century European history as it shows real life as it happened seventy years ago.

Don’t judge this by it’s cover
A good Dvd, however don’t be deceived by the cover art … This Dvd only gives about 5 minutes of footage to the RAF, and about 2 mins of which is aviation footage. The majority of the footage is USAAF, but nevertheless still good archive footage. The commentary is somewhat biased towards the U.S – (my opinion .. judge for yourself). The picture quality is very good for the age of the film. Obviously this has been viewed before being given a certificate exempt rating, HOWEVER It does show graphic images (about 15 seconds) of dead soldiers. (Just a warning to others wishing to show / buy this for younger viewers).

    Puts New Perspective On WWII
fantastic colour footage albeit mainly about our American Allies it’s still very relevant to the global conflict and not for the squemish I’d say but god bless em all.

the horrors of the biggest catastrophe in the twentieth century
a good programe recomended in color it makes it more interesting as opposed to large footage of black and white

  8. Lester Day

    Good but …
It views the second World war chiefly from the American aspect. Having said that, it did fill in for me many details of the war in the Pacific.I preferred the John Thaw version of the war in colour, yet it was well worth the £2 I paid for it!
