Holocaust survivor Eddie Jaku made a vow to smile every day and believed he was the ‘happiest man on earth’. In his inspirational memoir, he paid tribute to those who were lost by telling his story and sharing his wisdom.

‘Eddie looked evil in the eye and met it with joy and kindness . . . [his] philosophy is life-affirming’ – Daily Express

Life can be beautiful if you make it beautiful. It is up to you.

Eddie Jaku always considered himself a German first, a Jew second. He was proud of his country. But all of that changed in November 1938, when he was beaten, arrested and taken to a concentration camp.

Over the next seven years, Eddie faced unimaginable horrors every day, first in Buchenwald, then in Auschwitz, then on a Nazi death march. He lost family, friends, his country.

The Happiest Man on Earth is a powerful, heartbreaking and ultimately hopeful memoir of how happiness can be found even in the darkest of times.

‘Australia’s answer to Captain Tom . . . a memoir that extols the power of hope, love and mutual support’ – The Times

    Inspiring, tragic, but ultimately beautiful.
Inspiring, tragic, but ultimately beautiful.A story that will reshape your perspective on all things, and a true robot-test: if you don’t like it or aren’t moved by it, you are surely a robot.

What an amazing, wonderful man. This book is a treasure and should become a classic
Eddie Jaku expresses the hope, near the end of the book, that people won’t forget about the atrocities of the Holocaust once the last survivors are gone. With a book like this one around, they certainly won’t forget. This should be required reading at A level. I am in awe of this man, and wish I could meet him. He has not only survived unspeakable cruelty and horror, he has shone. That he should live to a hundred after such treatment is remarkable in itself, but that he should then write a very readable and absorbing book about it all is astonishing. He was also still in demand as a public speaker when he wrote the book. He refers to the reader as his new friend, and I certainly felt accepted and loved as a friend. The narrator was a perfect choice; I would forget that I wasn’t listening to Eddie as the voice cracked and faltered at difficult points. It was so sympathetically read, all the way through, and I would want to listen to more narration by this reader. I didn’t want the book to end, and hoped Eddie would write another book; maybe a foolish hope, but why not? I totally disagree with the reviewer who said that this was more of a self-help book than anything. Space was definitely given to encouraging the reader, but most of the book was about his wartime experiences, and the early years after the war. I really can’t find the words to express how much I appreciated this book and recommend it wholeheartedly.

A shocking retelling of one man’s experiences during WII and how the power of choosing hope has made all the difference. Eddie’s story is truly touching and humbling in a world where history repeats itself, it’s wise to take advise from someone who has experienced life as he has.Make yourself a new friend and read The Happiest Man on Earth. Through the darkness, you’ll find hope and inspiration for your own life. This book wakes each us up to just how serious and dangerous hate can be in our society. As individuals we must never take for granted the precious freedoms we enjoy in our country and realize our responsibility as citizens to protect these freedoms from individuals who promote hate“Hate is the beginning of a disease, like cancer. It may kill your enemy, but it will destroy you in the process too. Don’t blame others for your misfortunes. No one has ever said that life is easy, but it is easier if you love it. If you hate your life, it becomes impossible to live. This is why I try to be kind.”“Life is not always happiness. Sometimes, there are many hard days. But you must remember that you are lucky to be alive – we are all lucky in this way. Every breath is a gift. Life is beautiful if you let it be. Happiness is in your hands.”

Reading it felt like sitting beside a wise, compassionate grandfather and listening to his life experiences.Eddie Jaku’s account of the Holocaust is both harrowing and enlightening. He provides a profound and detailed perspective on the immense pain endured during that dark period. Yet, amidst the suffering, Jaku imparts invaluable life lessons on happiness and resilience. Each chapter is filled with wisdom that not only recounts history but also inspires readers to find joy and meaning in their own lives. The emotional weight of this book has shifted my perspective on life. It’s a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the importance of embracing happiness despite life’s trials. I believe this book is a must-read for everyone. It has earned a solid 5 stars from me, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a moving and thought-provoking read.
